Teamwork Model

Teamwork is best understood as a dynamic property of every group. It varies across a broad continuum from day to day—even moment to moment. We define the negative end of the continuum as Pseudo-Teamwork and the positive end as Excellence in Teamwork.

Teamwork Continuum

Pseudo-Teamwork--------------------------- Excellence in Teamwork

The challenge for every team is to continuously improve their ability to function on the positive end of the continuum—to sustain higher and higher levels of performance. The value of a model is in building a shared understanding of what constitutes outstanding teamwork. This makes it possible for every member of the team to continuously improve their team skills and their ability to add value to the work of the team.

Here is our view of the positive end of the continuum: How does this compare with the way groups view good teamwork in your organization?

"Successful teamwork requires doing lots of unspectacular little things, constant attention to the details, building one-on-one relationships, following up on commitments and an obsessive concern for communicating information."
